Programme Welcomes President of Ireland
The Ireland Wales Programme had the honour of welcoming the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins to meet 11 of its cross-border projects at Swansea University on 28th October 2014.
President Higgins met INSPIRE, MISE, ACT, CAN, mCommunity, Smart Coasts, Ecojel, IMPACT and WIN-IPT - all part-funded through the 2007-13 Programme.
In his speech, President Higgins acknowledged the historical and cultural heritage shared by both Ireland and Wales, referring to both as, “siblings – so long together, we no longer need to argue who is older and who is younger. Our interaction has been constant and, at times, intense”.
President Higgins praised the Programme as an important tool for achieving the shared aspirations of Ireland and Wales towards living fulfilling lives in cohesive societies, where good jobs are available to all, and communities enabled to thrive in harmony with their natural environment as fellow citizens of the European Union.
President Higgins acknowledged the achievements of the Programme over the past two decades for the periods 1994-99, 2000-06 and the current 2007-13 Programme providing a most valuable framework that will further enhance cross-border cooperation on common challenges. He also noted that the incoming 2014-20 Programme will serve to further deepen the relationship between the two nations.
